Local Plan 2015-2030 Preferred Options for Consultation

Representation ID: 179

Respondent: Mr Stephen McDermid

Representation Summary:

When will Council tenants who wish to downsize be able to get first refusal on smaller accommodation to free-up larger accommodation for families? There is no smaller unit accomodation available and future provision will be for high-rise flats. Flats may not be suitable for the elderly and/or those with medical conditions and mobility problems. We need some one & two bedroom bungalows to be built. I live in a three bedroom house and would consider downsizing to two bedrooms, but not into a flat.

I was reading with interest about the proposal to build new homes in Brentwood area. I was justing asking when and if this policy does go through would tenants, who wish to downsize be able to get first refusal on smaller accommodation, so freeing up larger accommodation for larger familys? Because as it stands at the moment you want tenants to down size but there is either no smaller property's, or what ones will become available will be flats in tower blocks, which most of your older tenants waited years to get out of.

Also they will be getting older now and would have to take into consideration that in the future or even now might be having medical or mobility problems, so taking a flat would not be an option.

I feel if you were to build some one /two bedroom bungalows and offer them to people who might wish to downsize they would jump at the chance. I at the moment am living in 3 bedroom house and would consider downsizing to two bedroom, but under no circumstances would i go back into a flat, I have rheumatoid arthritis and do not know how bad that is going to get. Also I lived in a tower block in Brentwood for many years and we had problems every night with loud music nappies being thrown from windows, lifts breaking down etc. I am nearly 60 and there is no way I would like to go back into a flat like this to spend the rest of my life in.
